August
We cannot emphasize enough that the safety of our campers is our first and foremost concern. To deal with this, our plans and protocols have been guided by Dr. Israel Zyskind MD, a well known pediatrician in Brooklyn.
The dreams of being in the Canadian Rockies this summer, drifted away as Canada closed its border to US citizens. As the weeks went by, the borders remained closed without any indication of when and to what extent they plan to reopen.
Although we could not make the Canadian Rockies dream happen, what about the American Rockies. Can Nesiot West, make a trip out west? When discussing this option with Dr. Zyskind, he was not comfortable with us taking a flight, and frankly neither are we.
In such a year, the only way we can safely travel is if we are able to create a "bubble" within camp. How do we that?
Everyone coming to camp gets tested to make sure they don't bring COVID to camp.
Driving to and from all our travel destinations.
Staying in private homes as opposed to hotels.
Keeping to outdoor activities when coming in contact with others outside of camp.
With these protocols in mind, we cannot in good conscience take your daughters on a plane this summer.
After understanding our decision not to go out west, what can we offer you?
We CANNOT offer you a trip to replace the Canadian Rockies. Let's be real, the Canadian Rockies is compared to the Swiss Alps so we're not going to be doing anything comparable to that this summer.
What we can offer, based on Dr. Zyskind's directive, is a super-fun jam-packed trip to Florida. We have an amazing itinerary in place for an Orlando based trip. For those that have come with us in the past to Florida, this trip has some overlap, but overall is a new and upgraded trip.
Details
Please read carefully below as we detail the trip. Obviously, things can change in ways we cannot predict and we will pivot accordingly.
1. We would drive straight down to Orlando, be there for 2+ weeks and then drive straight back. (The drive is shorter and more feasible than many realize).
2. The cost of camp is $3395.
3. The dates of the trip would be Monday, August 3rd - Wednesday, August 19th.
4. We will stay in a magnificent home with a private pool for the entire duration of our camp. We will be implementing safety measures including daily cleaning and sanitizing of the entire home, a no sharing hand towel rule, routine use of hand sanitizer, regular hand washing, and use of face masks and gloves when necessary.
5. What about the current situation in Florida? A few points below.
Approximately 75% of the new cases are in South Florida; (Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties), where we will not be.
The area where we are going to, Osceola County, is 1% of the total COVID cases in Florida while they are 3% of the population. More importantly, the recent rise in cases has been insignificant for the area we will be in.
All the areas where amenities and attractions are located are taking extreme care to be sure the sanitation procedures are on the max standards.
They are catching a lot of asymptomatic cases which previously due to lack of testing were going unrecorded.
Florida's Governor Desantis has no plans to put lock-downs or new restrictions in place. (Which for us that means attractions are currently open without any future plans to close.)
6. Recently, Governor Cuomo & Murphy instituted a 14-day quarantine for people returning from Florida. It is not clear yet, how the NY & NJ government can implement a mandatory quarantine for flights coming in from Florida but especially for those returning from Florida by car. This being said, we all still have personal responsibility to make sure we do not infect others. As we are all aware, it is possible to be an asymptomatic carrier of COVID-19 therefore all campers when upon returning from the trip should be careful for 14 days not to unknowingly expose anyone more vulnerable.
